2012 Trek Madone 3.1

For years now, Trek's Madones have set the standard for excellence, winning everything from local races to Grand Tours. The full-carbon 3.1 is made from 300-Series OCLV carbon with a Bontrager Race carbon fork. This frameset is light, stiff and comfortable because the folks at Trek are masters at the material, they do it right. The solid components are chosen for their combo of durability, reliability and straight-up value like the 10-speed Shimano drivetrain with SRAM compact cranks and Bontrager controls and wheels. The geometry is smack-dab in the middle between upright and aggressive racer, it's neutral without feeling dull; fast, without being twitchy.

Comments:

After a 25+ year Hiatus from road biking I decided to get back on the road, and this is what best suited me. I am a Disabled Vet - too much garbarge breathed in from burn pits led to asthma and narrowed airway; moderate exertion was what the Doctor ordered and this fit the best for me. I could roll along the white lines and the 3.1 absorbed the bumps better than the 5.2 or 4.7. I have been on Trek since 1985. This is my 11th Trek bought. Price and a little risk aversion incase cycling was in my mind but not in my lungs lead me to purchase a close out from the previous year. Components - I am not a SRAM fan, on my Mtn Bike the shifters are cheap and have failed me; on this bike, I broke the Crank in under 200 miles; so a new Shimano 105 and BB as an upfront expense. The brakes are no-name "alloy" brakes, they work but do not inspire confidence, they will be replaced before summer is out or if I start climbing/decending more... I did a 40+mile ride in the first days of ownership - it was easy and quicker than expected. The seat isn't great, but it would have been much worse on an aluminum frame. Like pedals, I wonder why bikes come with seats, pick one out on your own... Not having owned a road bike in a generation brought many new surprises to me, weight and shifting were two immediate improvements. I love Shimano parts, I wish the bike were all Shimano - a little mismatching is fine to save money, but it highlighted the poor quality to go through the crank so quickly.

I went to the 3.1 from a trek 1000, seems that there is a difference in shifting, smooth cornering, proformance. This bike handles great and is supper for having fun. I did change the seat and adjusted the handle bars up to fit me. It would be easy to make this bike go even faster by changing chain rings or sprockets but I like what I now have.

I am currently new to the world of road biking, but I bought this bike a couple of weeks ago and could not be happier. The bike is extremely light and handles well. I expect that it will last me a long time. The crankset is very responsive. This bike is fast. The gears shift easily.

I love this bike. It's nice and light, responsive and fast. Just needs some tuning on the gears a bit as all bikes do so will be bringing it in soon to the local [...] store. Big thanks to the staff at the [..] location too!, they're very knowledgable, experienced and so friendly.

What can I say? When I got this bike last month I haven't stopped riding it! it's been addicitve. The Madone 3.1 is very light because of its carbon frame. The components are good, not top of the line but it is responsive. The bike is pretty fast! I like the color, gloss black/red and the price I paid for it is a steal for a Trek Carbon fiber road bike. I cant wait to ride the following day! Great bike from Trek...once again!!!

                Comments:

Bought this bike after test riding entry level carbon frame offerings from Felt, Giant, and Scott. Felt was only one close to matching the ride exhilaration of the Madone 3.1. Trek saved me $300 !!! My step-up from aluminum to carbon was awesome. Understand that everything was an upgrade from what I was riding. Riding is now a pure joy. I've put 1500 miles on since August. My bike feels like an extension of my legs on steroids, only this is all legal. 30 mile spins in 1.5 hours are now a common occurrence. Rode my first century ever in easy comfort. Great bike, fast, responsive, and very comfortable on the hoods or hammering in the drops. If you find a friendly knowledgeable LBS that deals Trek, give them a try. I feel like I made a great choice. Only downside is all I want to do is roll.....
